Can’t you also think if it as “I don’t like having strings/obligations to XYZ?” I don’t feel like I’m hurting the entities I owe; I could care less about a bank. But nonetheless the debt is hanging over my head and it’s frustrating to know I have to keep an association with them.

That's just ignorant because on their books your debt is an ASSET and if you pay it off the asset is gone. If you never pay it off they might actually make more money.
