Then you reset, erase your identity but preserve your consciousness, and live a different life Sort of like Michael at the end

The point of the Buddhist idea of samsara is that's what happens when you die normally Nirvana is what happens when your soul has learned everything it needs to learn

TGP says that, that the only point of resets is to learn something from them, otherwise it's just more torture

Yeah, I guess I just like life and hedonism enough to think that's not true Like if I could eternally relive my first party at college, the best D&D game I ever had, and playing KOTOR the first time, mindwiped after each, I think that'd be an ideal afterlife

How is doing that on a perfectly repeated loop for eternity actually different from doing it once and then stopping

Because of what does (or doesn't) come after the stopping. For many people, well some people at least, the idea of non-existence is terrifying/distressing on a deep, deep level.

So basically, the ideal Ellie has is (I think) that if there is some sort of afterlife, existing forever in a pleasant manner and constantly having new and fun experiences would be the best.

But, if you posit that this is impossible, that eventually you will run out of new things to do and get tired of life, and the options are to then basically kill your soul and cease to exist so you don't suffer, or mind wipe for an endless repeating loop of enjoyment...

Well, then the latter seems like a much better option to her, and also still a perfectly happy existence. (Correct me Ellie if I'm misunderstanding anything here.) I kinda think I'd go for the latter as well if given the choice.

The point is the "reset" is a cessation of existence by that standard anyway, without a continuous experience of memory of you don't have a self

I haven't watched the Good Place (only absorbed plot points and spoilers from people I follow) so I'm not 100% sure how "resets" work on the show as far as all the nitty gritty details go.

I can understand your point of view, but I don't fully agree, especially if one is positing that one has a soul, some core part of their being that is (possibly) eternal. And there are potential ways to deal with memories and experiences beyond just blanket mind wipes too.

Eh, you don't have to forget everything at once to have stuff continuously falling off the back of your memory and able to be experienced fresh again going forward.

Like suppose instead of just one college party, D&D game, and KOTOR, you experience ten thousand each of college parties, D&D games, and video games, all more or less equally enjoyable. By the time the first one rolls back around you get almost as much out of it as the first time

I disagree with that. I've woken up disoriented, even forgotten my name after a fall once (for like a minute), it's not the same as ceasing to exist
