People get the impression that movie adaptations can never outshine the book because when they do outshine the book everyone forgets the book The ones that you KNOW are adaptations are the ones where the book is a classic and it's not a fair bar to clear

I'll go to bat here for Kubrick and say his 2001 is a LOT better than Clarke's 2001 and his The Shining is better than Stephen King's (Douglas Adams said listening to Clarke rant about how much Kubrick cut out and ignored "leaves one with a tremendous respect for Kubrick")

Most of the movies you mention are not straight adaptions, they are very much “reimaginings” as the original tweet puts it. Especially Godfather and the shining.

That's a very strict interpretation of "straight adaptation", it means "straight adaptations" basically don't exist
