I was never a big fan of the book. There's a lot about it that's really different and interesting from the movie, but I far prefer the movie's framing device. The Book's narrator is essentially the Movie's kid grown up and trying to reconnect to the source material.

Ha, yeah, the framing device in the book made me so viscerally uncomfortable that I looked up William Goldman's wife and kids so I could reassure myself that it was fictional. I do like the book, especially the added backstory for Inigo and Fezzik. But that frame story

I dunno for me the whole cool thing about the book was this very vivid picture of the fictional Goldman as this kind of seedy schmuck who's reached midlife crisis age and is desperately seeking something that reminds him of the hopes and dreams of his youth

(And I read the book when I was a teenager)

As far as misogyny etc goes the way the fictional Goldman talks about his fictional wife is pretty awful but I read it as us very much being intended to dislike the fictional Goldman in a lot of ways - it's about him being a loser

I feel like I tolerated it more when I read it as a kid, but as an adult it was rough. I felt worse about the way the narrator spoke about his son than about his wife. It's exceptionally fatphobic

Yeah it's definitely a thing where I think the real Goldman has a nasty prejudice there
