I think we all just ultimately know that treating animals as people or treating them as things makes sense but this middle ground most of us are in is unsustainable "It's okay to raise them to be killed and cut up and eaten but not if you do it in a CRUEL way"

Arthur, I’m a big fan and we’re usually on the same page, but myself and your average vegans don’t think cows are people, hell, we don’t eat honey and nobody would argue bees are people, we think that we should prevent sentient creatures from suffering as much as we’re able.
-
There are absolutely horrible Peta types who will tell you the animal ag industry is worse than chattel slavery and the holocaust, so I can’t say you set up a strawman, but maybe a hay-lady, you’re definitely in the disingenuous ballpark.

the thing is, you don't even need to go all the way to "animals are persons" even if they are some lesser object of concern, so long as they are any concern at all, then factory farms are pretty evidently one of the greatest atrocities in history
-
I do think there are a lot of people who at least have some discomfort around continuing to eat meat, but have mostly settled with it, which makes the reminders grating.

There are a lot of very questionable comparisons in the comments there

In theory it's not 100% black and white because you could say cows have less moral value than humans and still say they have enough value to consider to a degree.
-
I think the point is that if cows are even worth like 2% of a human then you still have to close down the factory farms even if it means all meat and milk gets priced out of reach for most people

You can really see this in the plastic straw debate where the well-being of animals and the well-being of people with disabilities come into conflict.

Which is kind of funny because vegans don't seem to care about the migrant workers who are routinely abused, used, and disposed of in agribusiness. Like, postures of morality are kinda concerning there.
