The Phillip Schofield discourse reminds me of just how many UK viewers' reaction to the Black Mirror episode "Striking Vipers" was "This is a cautionary tale about how porn ruins marriages" AWFUL take

And I agree that the wife in that episode was badly treated! But how do you dismiss the core romance of the episode as "Well sexy Internet stuff will warp your mind and that's why it should be banned" Like JFC fuck off

it's very very hard for me to read that episode as being about anything other than being trans like, they explicitly disavow it, because the author thinks it's the wrong reading or something? but also the author is wrong.

to loop this back to schofield, i'm not the first to say: the narrative that schofield was always a self-aware gay man who deliberately deceived a wife he never loved itself relies on a conception of the self as luminous and easy to grasp

what striking vipers suggests, on a queer reading, is that desire -- sexuality, sure, but also identity -- can be hilariously opaque even to yourself so schofield may have been in love with his wife -- may indeed still be in love with her

He did a followup interview where he says that when he married her he did, yes, absolutely know he was into guys, but didn't think this fact was "important" And during their marriage his self-interrogation was mostly about whether he was "bisexual"

Settling on "gay" was apparently the end result of a long struggle

Worth noting that it's conservatives who increase the chance of these things happening when they push messages like "People put too much emphasis on sex in marriage, what's wrong with having a marriage built on commitment to building a family" etc
