My only take here is streaming services should have two separate sets of subs, the "accurate" one for people watching in the original language and the one that actually matches the dub for people watching thathttps://twitter.com/emilioherce/status/1226953281466925057 …

Yeah that is pretty annoying, especially old anime with wacky English dubs that differ a lot.

Yessssss!! I notice this in French all the time. Often you can tell the the dub was done for one region (eg France) and the sun done for Canada or vice versa.

One thing that immediately jumped out about Parasite was when they referenced a North Korean general the subs said North Korean, I assume the more accurate translation would just say Northern. Same way ppl here refer to the Troubles in the North, not Northern Ireland

Just finished watching a series produced in Mandarin, with English subs that are consistently different in mostly irrelevant ways, like word order. Makes it hard for me, since I need subs to supplement my severe hearing loss.

Come to think of it, the differences between sub and dub remind me of a bad copy edit.

Yes! This really screws with my trying to learn a language by having the subtitles on.

As someone who is trying to learn a few foreign languages, I'd like a wide range of subtitle language choices on streaming services. On DVDs with those choices, I watch English language movies with Spanish and Korean subtitles to help reinforce my learning. And vice versa.
