It's funny that the 92nd Oscars took both sides on the dub-vs-sub war, giving its biggest awards to a movie that was only released with subs internationally but also having a big tribute to all the dub VAs of Frozen and referring to the original VA as just "American Elsa"

(My take on this is always that both sides have a point Not seeing Parasite because you don't watch subbed movies is stupid But OTOH the argument that only Americans dislike subs is ridiculous - the Anglosphere is the only place people DON'T regularly watch dubs)

All the Marvel movies and shit come out as dubs in China, that's how you typically watch foreign movies, it's not even a question

My favorite sub was when I bought a bootleg dvd of defiance while I was in Iraq. It had obviously been recorded by camcorder in a theater and, I shit you not: Arabic subtitles. Daniel Craig. Playing a Polish Jewish partisan. With Arabic subtitles. Bootlegged. In Iraq.

South African TV had (has?) rules around language -- a certain percentage of broadcast time has to be spent in each official language. So they dub movies. Which led to Rambo III in Zulu.

China also just dubbed all their dramas as well? So they're very used to dubbing and not hearing the actor's voice as the norm. Almost all the tv shows are dubbed by voice actors in Proper Mandarin rather than the actor who did the acting.

Partly because they never got into the production culture of capturing sound on set as a thing, but there also seem to be a lot of other rationalisations such as how actors have regional accents or are only good at "face" acting and can't act with their voices.

In France you could see either original or dubbed versions of most of the big American movies, at least in Paris (might be different in the provinces). Germany was mostly dubbed.

There are a World Civil Dub-Spanish Wars going on, and it doesn't seems to end soon. The castilian and spanish Frozen song was a bit like an armistice.

In Finland, only animation and movies meant for little-little kids are dubbed. It's so weird for how reading subtitles while watching a movie is such a big deal to Americans, while it's part of the everyday life of movie fans here.
