The much better point is that she has the same parasites as the skulls and they don't need to be naked. Frankly I think everyone would've tolerated Quiet way more if there was no explanation and she just had a horny design. The shower scene was straight up softcore porn though.

Also "The End" was the first "breaths through his skin" person and he wore a ghillie suit.

That doesn't matter. Quiet definitely has functional lungs. Otherwise she couldn't hum constantly and speak the few times she does.

Even assuming she breathes through her skin, does she _exhale_ through her skin??? Her body has to be performing some kind of cellular respiration, so how does CO2 leave her body? Honestly the explanation was so dumb it could have just not been there.

If it were physically possible for an animal the size of a human to get enough oxygen by breathing through its skin, we would We don't because we fundamentally can't Lungs are very complicated organs and we didn't evolve them just for the heck of it

Ok, now I desperately want to know if there is any actual scientific data saying if a modern human could survive by breathing through their skin, because that would be hilarious and awesome. I assume you're just logically extrapolating based on evolution right?

All of the animals that breathe through their skin are smaller than us and the ones that exclusively breathe through their skin are a lot smaller than us (worms and starfish and such)

It's just the math of the ratio of surface area to volume Worms and sea snakes and such can get pretty big while breathing mostly through their skin by being long and thin An animal like a hellbender has wrinkles and folds all over its skin to boost its oxygen intake

We have lungs instead, and lungs are a specialized organ where we have lots and lots of tiny chambers (alveolae) of very delicate material to do the gas exchange inside the body where it's protected If it were all unfolded it'd have the surface area of half a tennis court

There's also the part where gas exchange can only occur while dissolved in water, which is why the animals that breathe through their skin are all slimy and why you stop being able to breathe if your lungs dry out

Well it wasn't the "study on whether a human sized animal could survive breathing through its skin" I was hoping for, but that all makes a lot of sense.
