I'm not complaining, but how the hell does Parasite get both Best International Film and Best Picture?

The subcategories aren't exclusive, they're meant to give visibility to types of films that have a hard time competing otherwise but you can compete for both the subcategory and the main prize

So like Up won Best Animated Feature and was also nominated for Best Picture in 2010

Similarly, a Documentary COULD be nominated for Best Picture, it’s just never happened.

And there's a general understanding if a film wins in one defined "best film" subcategory, that's it's accolade and the highest honor it will get.

Well, 1) Parasite is a really really good movie, 2) they've deliberately relaxed rules for induction into the Academy to make it less of an old and white body of voters because of the
#OscarsSoWhite campaign, 3) they're also aware of how much people yelled at them over Green Book1 reply 1 retweet 7 likes
The Academy are human beings aware of their reputation like anyone else, anonymous voting or no anonymous voting There's always chatter about the Oscars only being able to maintain relevance as long as they keep people happy
