This. (It also kinda fucks people over during mourning etc.) It's the flip side of tone-policing, in a way: you're supposed to show X amount of emotion. More is "hysterical," less is insincere.

Belatedly-occurring followup: you're also supposed to *have* the correct amount and variety of emotion, which doesn't allow for, say, someone in Depp's situation to mostly (and horribly) be resigned to things not getting better and thus calmer.

It's an impossible standard anyway People are very free about just deciding the person they like in any given situation is showing appropriate emotion and the other person isn't
