Okay look fuck it I'm tweeting this with the names in it: If you actually listen to the hour long tape of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's "counseling session" or read the transcript, it is very difficult to come away with the impression of him being the abuser, or "mutual abuse"

That is what their conversation is specifically about, and they argue over it for an hour The conversation is EXPLICITLY Heard repeatedly saying it's a problem Depp routinely flees from confrontation and Depp saying it's a problem she initiates violence

It's possible that this is all bullshit and he was the abuser, but only, as I see it, if one of two things is true:

1) The audio is thoroughly and skilfully doctored and the conversation is thoroughly falsified 2) She's so mentally broken by abuse she's fully collaborating with a gaslighting false narrative he's created for the whole length of the conversation

A multilevel kind of false narrative, where she is fully in denial/suppressing memories of him initiating violence but she's still furious and bitter toward him over the exact opposite behavior, him being the bad guy because he always withdraws and flees

I find 1) easier to imagine than 2), although I fully concede the world is complicated and any number of things might be true But I really can't see myself, at this point, arguing for either 1) or 2) and not feeling really gross about it

And look I don't *want* to be on Johnny Depp's "side", I am put off by the company the pro-Depp hashtags have attracted throughout this whole thing, I'm not a fan of his acting at all (much less a thirsty stan) But the audio is what it is

Look I don't want to have been wrong all this time and to eat crow now I want an explanation that makes me not have to say I was helping out an abuser when making Johnny Depp jokes for the past few years What's disturbing me is that Heard's defenders aren't giving me one

I think the generous narrative where nothing we've seen is falsified, like I said, is that he became violent after years of absorbing violence and the infamous tape of him throwing a phone at her is after he "snapped"

Which is what he alludes to in the hour long audio about why he has to leave ("Would you rather the man stay there until he loses it and actually does pop the wife") And while that's not excusable if it's not actual self-defense it's not the narrative we were given

That makes him the "reactive" abuser, not her And while it is true that gender matters as does physical size and strength, if that's the true narrative then her leaked response "No one's gonna believe a 115-pound woman started it" is not okay

the thing for me is if you reverse the genders of what was said everybody would say immediately that it reads exactly like a classic abuse situation
