Right. But how is the wavelength of the face of a card facing away from you appreciably different from the back of the card? It seems unlikely he’d be able to differentiate between things that have the same material consistency unless it’s line-of-sight.

Well, the ink on the card has a different wavelength than the cardstock It's like if you imagine the cards are tissue paper and there's a very bright light shining on them - depending on the inks used for the front and back you might be able to see right through it

Seems you’d need special ink to see through the back but not front pips. With replicator tech, hopefully they’d make a Visor-resistant deck, limiting his advantages to just seeing body reaction of each player in minute detail with an adaptive computer interpreting what it means.

Geordi doesn't seem to have lie detector powers in any of the later episodes after they mention it and it seems like if polygraphs don't actually work seeing people's faces in infrared wouldn't be any more necessarily reliable

Anyway the one player it obviously wouldn't work on is Data, who's also his biggest threat for all the other reasons

Yeah for the middle part of the show he's not even a cop or a soldier, he straight up works for a progressive humanitarian NGO

Yeah but it's like it was specifically created, despite the implausibility, because they didn't want him to be a CIA agent or something similar
