That seems to rest on the premise then that nobody would ever cheat at a game with no stakes, which really doesn't hold water.

Well, not if the game is with your fellow Federation officers you have to work with every day

There IS some speculation that maybe Geordi can see all the cards but, since the games aren't for any kind of real money, he's just choosing to throw some hands and win others to keep things interesting

Can Geordi see cards? I figured the face and back might have some special marking letting him “see” patterns, but reading text seems like one of the hardest things to translate to a visor. Daredevil can’t do it. The empath and android (who doubles as Sherlock) are ironic.

The VISOR isn't sonar based like Daredevil's vision, it actually does sense electromagnetic radiation including visible light The biggest reason Geordi has problems with it is it can't filter out other wavelengths to let him see "normally", he has to filter mentally

Right. But how is the wavelength of the face of a card facing away from you appreciably different from the back of the card? It seems unlikely he’d be able to differentiate between things that have the same material consistency unless it’s line-of-sight.

Well, the ink on the card has a different wavelength than the cardstock It's like if you imagine the cards are tissue paper and there's a very bright light shining on them - depending on the inks used for the front and back you might be able to see right through it

Seems you’d need special ink to see through the back but not front pips. With replicator tech, hopefully they’d make a Visor-resistant deck, limiting his advantages to just seeing body reaction of each player in minute detail with an adaptive computer interpreting what it means.

Geordi doesn't seem to have lie detector powers in any of the later episodes after they mention it and it seems like if polygraphs don't actually work seeing people's faces in infrared wouldn't be any more necessarily reliable

Anyway the one player it obviously wouldn't work on is Data, who's also his biggest threat for all the other reasons

Although maybe he can also see the radio waves Data's brain gives off, who knows
