Sorry if this sounds conservative but Orwell, who got attacked a lot for being a Red Tory for this attitude, nonetheless was fond of challenging his fellow socialists in the 1930s "If Hitler invades Britain are you personally going to flee to New York or to Moscow"

I used to be very pro Good Laws but I am increasingly of the opinion that they are close to useless in a terrible legal culture. That doesn’t mean a written constitution guaranteeing rights is a bad thing, it’s not at all, but it’s never actually stopped the most flagrant abuses.

Legally it’s easy to argue that the British situation is far worse than the American one, but when we look at human/civil rights-related outcomes, it is hard to see evidence that America’s are substantially better.

I’m interested in this conversation because you’re trying to speak from hierarchy: “if I was in charge, I’d change all these things” The reason I like the Bill of Rights is because it’s a set of tools for people outside hierarchies to expand access to political power.
