So I was thinking about Jojo Rabbit, and I think I have a narrative critique. I am not doing a moral critique, because I'm not Jewish and it seems out of my lane given the filmmaker is. But narratively, as charming as the film is, I feel like Jojo gets off easy even for a kid

It is not clear to me that Jojo would have rejected fascism if not for these two things: 1) fascism caused his mom's death 2) he had a huge crush on the personification of fascism's ire in the story, while fascism was represented by a twisted, imaginary old man

Like, does it really count as having an epiphany about the humanity of your enemies if your one enemy is the only person left who will put up with your sht and you also think she's really hot?

I mean I feel like "what's up with this kid, can she get him to not kill her" is a bit stronger of a story than "will this kid overcome his fascism and anti-Semitism after fascists kill his mom, and are overthrown, and his only friend is a Jewish girl"

The kicking Hitler out of his head scene was even less of a, uh, kicker, when I saw it in context rather than as a clip, because he knows the real Hitler is dead at that point.

It's not even that I think the kid is a terrible person at the end, just that I don't really see what the message is other than "people side with the people around them and generally follow the direction of society"

Replying to @BootlegGirl
i imagine it plays a little different if you are the culutural default and need reassurance that you dont have to do the expected thing

This reassurance that he was only a child and he can't be blamed for being brainwashed is a big part of it, I think
