I hate people who "aren't comfortable with the mic" It's the 21st century, GET comfortable with the michttps://twitter.com/ambermlayne/status/1225495444723240966?s=19 …

My annoyance is with people thinking this is a matter of personal preference, an aesthetic choice, like it's optional for the people in the back (or anyone with hearing or auditory processing problems) to be able to hear you

It would be one thing if the people who just don't like the mic actually were skilled at projecting and maintaining volume (which still doesn't make using the mic optional) But they usually aren't, they're the people who are generally bad at speaking and need the mic more

If it helps: your audience isn't likely expecting perfection. Go ahead and say in your intro that you're not used to using the mic and make the effort. Encourages people speaking up to remind you if you wandered away or otherwise need to focus on it. They're invested after all.

*DEFINITELY* tell the sound guy if there is one. I will always do what I can to help inexperienced speakers, both beforehand with placement/advice and during with signal adjustments.
