I hate people who "aren't comfortable with the mic" It's the 21st century, GET comfortable with the michttps://twitter.com/ambermlayne/status/1225495444723240966?s=19 …

Prof: I think everyone can hear me, I don’t need the microphone right, you people in the back? Me (from the back): This is a 300 person class and huge lecture hall! Please don’t ask people to disclose their accessibility needs and just USE. THE. MICROPHONE. Prof: ok I guess

it's really not as simple as it seems - you try lecturing to hundreds of bored uni students staring! it might be a little irrational to fear the microphone, but it's also a totally human response that happens when nervous; no need to hate anyone for being a bit shy or anxious.

Sometimes it's anxiety; most of the time it's convenience: they don't want to be bothered with speaking into a mic and would rather be able to gesture, move around, etc. without worrying about head position/facing. Practice using the mic. It's part of the job.

sure we do practice, but still. And actually they have mics now that you can pin to your shirt. it's just silly to denounce lecturers who are mic shy - lecturers are just people and you might be surprised at how many aspects of this job you receive absolutely no training for!

I have done a lot of public speaking and acting, with and without mics I'm aware it's not always easy, it's not easy to be in a meeting or lecture and not be able to hear shit either

oh sure, you definitely want to make sure everyone can hear. mics are useful. It's just that lecturers are researchers with no public speaking training. The expectation is immediate perfection in both substance & appearance...a little patience at the start is always appreciated!

I'm fine with that The fact that you aren't Cicero and I don't expect you to be is why I just want you to talk into the mic

I will say this from my long-ago acting training - "Mic-shyness" is a subset of shyness in general, you don't like your voice being amplified because that causes it to instantly be the center of everyone's attention But if you're speaking, that's what's supposed to happen

So like if you're going to make any kind of regular thing out of talking in front of people you gotta get over that If your voice is giving off the social cues of someone who doesn't want attention, it will in various ways become hard to pay attention
