If disempowering billionaires does something to help people marginalized for their identities and it's the best way to do that, I'm not against it. I do think there's a logical flaw in the billionaire obsession though

By the premises everyone in this convo except some of the billionaires agrees with 1) billionaires have so much money that they will never have to worry about a market downswing or about needing to get more to live more than comfortably anywhere in the world & leave inheritance >

Given this how do you square the following claim: everything bad that happens stems from billionaires trying to make a bit more money or stop a decline in the value of one of their holdings or whatever? We've already established everything is pocket change to them

I frankly believe that bigotry is the primary force in politics, that it has nothing to do with money, and that it arises from a desire of parents to have complete control over their children through adulthood and into death.

that's actually a concise and low-key brilliant way to express the authoritarian/libertarian conflict in politics. I do think the egalitarian/hierarchical one also exists, though, but your instinct that the former is more impactful is probably correct? feels correct

it seems to me that those two dichotomies are variations of each other it's about people wanting to exercise Authoritah and/or having clear "chains of command" that run from the top to the bottom of society i hate that idea, others seem to love it

eh, I think in our culture people tend to either be libertarian egalitarians or hierarchical authoritarians but both hierarchical libertarianism (neoliberalism) and egalitarian authoritarianism (communism) have had their moments in the sun and still have a lot of supporters

I mean egalitarian authoritarianism is really having a bit of a moment right now, it's the whole "take control back to The People from the rootless cosmopolitan elites" movement that kinda spans both left and right wing parties

I don't know that it actually ends up being all that egalitarian

That's the thing about so-called "egalitarian authoritarianism", if there's an authority it can't ACTUALLY be "the people", "the people" aren't an actual thing, they do not speak with one voice or share one beating heart hoping for a better future It's always just some guy

It's like that take that people who don't worship God will go on to worship men As though anytime people think they're listening to God it's not also just some guy

And as if it's somehow worse to worship someone you at least know for sure is real. I mean, don't worship anyone, obviously. But if you're gonna, worship someone who's real and that you can hold accountable.

that's an interesting view. surely if you're going to invest absolute authority in someone it might as well be someone who isn't real so they can never actually exercise that authority
