Okay but he's clearly saying this to challenge the conventional wisdom that writers are more important because in point of fact they're treated as more important It's still quite a bit easier to achieve fame and fortune as a prose author than as an artist

Like whatever personal inferiority complex you have here if you take this 100% seriously you've completely missed the point He's fighting back against the status quo that the writer is generally always seen as the more important member of the team

No, I know the specific context of what he's saying, I just... idk, just employing it as a rhetorical technique/thought experiment doesn't go far enough for me

Once literally got hired on as a writer of a game that made 10k on a kickstarter only for the producer to finally admit to us after months of hedging that she didn't actually plan on paying any of her writers anything, so that she could go ahead and spend all the money on art

That's games, games are stupid about writing because they lump it in with coding

Like they think it's something a coder can just do in their spare time

But in the context of say a graphic novel the writer is the coder

In general, and this is often unfair, but in a project the person who's in charge of deploying assets has power over the people who create assets This is why in movies the director is even more powerful than the writer (because the script can't directly turn into a movie)

Yeah but a comic book artist can also be the writer, as Gillen points out. I frankly don't know why so many of them work for hire. If I could draw I would be creating my own original comics non-stop and drawing for someone else would seem absurd

Writing is its own skill, notwithstanding that most of us are capable of written verbal communication, just as acting is its own skill even though even more of us can talk

"Writing" meaning not just wordsmithing but having ideas and organizing those ideas into a story
