Exactly. The 2000 year old charts still being used say I'm a Scorpio, but the stars today say I'm a Virgo

I think this led to a genuine schism. The larger group of astrologers use the "tropical" astrology that's off by one

Right, they're currently saying that the actual constellations don't matter and are just a convenient label for that section of the sky, and the fact that Libra is a pair of scales only coincidentally has anything to do with what being "a Libra" means Which is nonsense

It is as much nonsense as it is utter nonsense to believe that some stars, that coincidentally seem to form a constellation, if seen from Earth, have somehow an influence on our behaviour and our fate.

Yeah but what I mean is they're obviously lying when they say the constellations have nothing to do with the meaning of the signs

Ironically it would be quite a bit more plausible if they agreed that celestial bodies have *nothing* to do with it. Just a simple "You were born at this time and it will affect your life path because of destiny and/or the accrued effects of birth time"

When you push them that is what they say - it's not that the physical planet Mars has any kind of gravitational physical effect on you, it's just that certain times have certain meanings and the movement of Mars in the sky marks that passage of time

It's a different worldview, the whole concept of divination is about the idea of magic synchronicity Tea leaves and entrails aren't physically connected to your life either, it's just God's way of sending you a message

The difference between tea leaves and planets: Tea leaves just randomly arrange, planets move according to the laws of physics. So, even if one thinks, someone, like a god, will send you messages, the planets (and stars) are not really usable for this purpose.

I thought the premise of astrology was that the movement of the planets has an actual influence on people's lives

It depends on the astrologer, but if you specifically challenge them on the whole tropical vs sidereal zodiac thing they'll fall back on saying that the celestial bodies are only metaphorical markers used for convenience
