Okay, so honest question for people with some experience with Japanese culture: I follow a number of accounts on here that share Japanese news from a leftist POV with an eye to avoiding stereotypes the West has about Japan. (thread/long question)

I keep seeing these accounts repost stuff about Japanese misogynists who are otaku, which of course I've heard plenty of and read plenty of evidence of re: GG-style (or so I thought) manipulation/attacking of content creators who are too feminist/"not sexy"

But I also see posts on these accounts I wouldn't expect to see on a leftist account outside Japan, suggesting these otaku are actually, like, porn-addicted or influenced to be like they are by oversexualized media

I feel like here we'd just say they were misogynist jerks who seek content that fits that, but it seems a lot of leftist folks who are in Japan, Japanese, or know about it, think there really is a sort of corrupting influence from sexualized media.

Here I'd assume that was a right wing or r*dfem narrative, but I guess in Japan.... Things are different? I'm just curious about people's perspectives. I don't consume hentai or whatever so I don't really have a stake, I'm just curious

American politics, both its left and its right wing, are way more "liberal" (or "libertarian") than the rest of the world We are all much more skeptical of social theories that deny individual agency - our people who do think like that tend to be religious

In other countries the idea of active social engineering through "censorship" is just accepted as a basic reality of life Not that it isn't a reality here either, we just deny it

it's true that different countries are different on this but America is actually kinda middle of the road. Spain is way more libertarian both in practice and in self-image, for example. Japan is very much on the "society must be carefully controlled" end of the scale though

in the US you might be used to "social degeneracy" being linked strongly to LGBTQ people as well as to sexualised media and video games. In the UK it's much more skewed towards being anti-sex exclusively and in Germany I believe they're paranoid about violence above all
