Wait, which husband and wife, C and E? That one's not really an issue it's possible to compromise on

Well, I guess he could've promised to stay until they both were ready to leave, but it's very strongly hinted that her attachment to him was preventing her from finally becoming mature enough to pass on herself

And that solution isn't a compromise, that's her getting everything she wants at his expense

I'm... not sure we had the same reading of that scene? Chidi isn't leaving because Eleanor is flawed, Chidi is leaving because it's time for him to leave, period

Eleanor's insecurity making her think her inadequacy is why Chidi's time has come IS her flaw And it's entirely her issue, it has nothing to do one way or the other with the fact that Chidi's time is up and holding him back causes him suffering

It's not his responsibility to fix it for her, that's the whole subtext of their final conversation Their relationship was originally based on her demanding that he fix her flaws for her and they've reached the point of knowing that's impossible and unfair to ask

Like I really think "Compromise between spouses is impossible" is a bad reading of the message here If the compromise is asking Chidi to stay with her until she's ready to go, Eleanor does ask that and he's perfectly willing to do it She just changes her mind
