But that means when he's firing on all cylinders he's really good at writing stories that get to a point of emotional closure without trying to make you feel like you "learned something"

The funny thing is, I'd argue Community is every bit as schmaltzy as Parks & Rec, there's just an undercurrent of existential despair about it. Mike Schuer comedies make you feel like so long as you have a support network, you can go places.

In Community, it goes as far as "so long as you have a support network." Entire episodes are dedicated to the protagonists bonding, learning some valuable lesson about how hard it can be to live with someone, etc.

And, natch, ultimately, throughout the show's run? Almost none of the characters achieve their dreams. The world is terrible, but it's at least manageable if you have friends.

Yeah Parks and Rec serving a massive plate of wish fulfillment with its ending really shows how much his POV changed as he got more license to indulge

If you actually look back at P&R S1 when it was "public-sector The Office" they actually explicitly state the stakes Nothing ever gets done in the Parks and Rec department, Leslie's plan for a new park is a pipe dream, and if it actually happens it'll be her biggest achievement

The epilogue having her morph into Hillary Clinton and be on the way to the White House made it really clear this was not at all even the same kind of show

Almost kind of feel like we can blame the final season of P&R for Trump getting elected, like it was such smug, self-congratulatory feelgood liberal bullshit that the Moirae themselves had to doom humanity just to spite the hubris of it

You know that it's text on The Good Place that the events of the show inadvertently caused everything bad that happened in 2016, including Brexit (and implicitly Trump)

Yeah if you don't care about spoilers The premise of the show starts with our characters being dead and in the afterlife, obviously And then in the course of various hijinks that retool the basic concept of the show repeatedly, they eventually get resurrected back on Earth

And since Season 1 of the show happened to start in 2016, we then learn that by meddling with the destiny of the world by going back in time and preventing the humans' original deaths, Michael caused history to go off the rails and the grand plan to dissolve into chaos that year
