-like Dwight Schrute who irl would be ideal alt.right fodder–the kind of person who harasses women online, writes racist manifestos on Reddit or channeboards, etc––is ultimately treated as just some harmless goof with a hidden heart of gold.

Or Leslie Knope as a well-meaning politician who never meaningfully has to struggle with systematic bigotry, despite the fact that––as Penelope noted––she would *precisely* be the kind of well-educated liberal white woman who'd throw queer people under the bus.

The fact that small towns in Indiana like that are built on Native genocide and are incredibly fucking racist today is played as a JOKE on P&R

That always bugged me. It's part of that "soft-comedy-with-the-occasional-edge" thing I was referring to, seemingly written from this **desperate** desire to believe we already live in a postracial society and we can make jokes like this willy nilly.

Yeah hence the fact that B99 may be trying to be a softer and more PC cop show than all the other cop shows but it ultimately still is a cop show

eh I don't agree there, like they're always fighting the NYPD, like the closing "joke" of last season was they ousted the villain from the position as chief and he took a much more high paying job in the private sector "the world truly is a terrible place"

Yeah, it turned out they didn't... meaningfully affect anything, and all they had to show for it was Holt humiliatingly demoted to a beat cop.

bullseye, which is a DARK theme the show is not unaware of, like compare the squad CONSTANTLY trying to fight the NYPD over its corruption & brutality vs. team cockroache who just rewrite the entire afterlife in 4 seasons

You know, that's a fair point. B99, I reckon, is desperately trying to argue its vision of a reformed police force is possible... but it's fighting an uphill battle it may never win. It's kind of Quixotic, in a way.

And more remarkably, as you noted, that's *textual.* Whereas Team Cockroach kinda easily rewrite the fundamental rules of the universe.

There's a meta thing with, like the comparison to Bojack I was making in the other subthread, choosing to end the show on Earth, in the living world, and leave the afterlife behind

Bojack gets some sort of final closure teased and then taken away Life goes on and is just more of the same

TGP did give us that ultimate fantasy of Heaven and let us bask in it for a whole hour long special But then it takes that ultimate closure away, and we go back to Earth and the life of a mortal man who no longer has any special power or knowledge about the universe
