she lost her uncle's phone number and any other way of getting in contact with him a few years after we visited him in Florida and was just like "well, I guess we've lost him forever", and didn't ever speak to him again for the rest of his life until he died in a housefire

when she was a kid she told her grandparents that she wanted bacon for breakfast and they were orthodox Jews and I guess that instead of actually suggesting something else they went to the deli that morning and just bought a side of fuckin' bacon I think about that a lot tbh

her father came downstairs and saw this and was like "dad what the fuck" and her grandpa was like "she wanted bacon dude, the hell was I supposed to do" and I just feel like if I think about this anecdote enough I will have solved this piece of the puzzle

Her dad's side. I actually don't know that they were orthodox but that's supposedly what Bella Abzug came from and it was the same family so I assume they were at least conservadox culturally

Orthodox Jews consider patrilineal descendants of Jews non-Jewish unless they convert

If she wasn't Jewish then there's nothing wrong with giving her bacon

Of course not, it's that they went out and bought some and prepared it for her

the funny thing is that as the story was told to me is that she didn't even feel that strongly about it, they just asked what she wanted for breakfast and was like "uh, how about some bacon and eggs?" and they just went with it and immediately fussed over what they were gonna do
