So some necessary context for everyone dunking on this tweet is that this kind of family story is extremely common among Chinese-American immigrants and has no connection to historical reality The story exists, as she says explicitly in the thread, as a motivational speechpic.twitter.com/vS3fXl1MZ7

It's a story about how your wealth can always be taken away, so you should never stop working hard The story contains no reflection on the morality of having an egg monopoly just like a family legend of being the secret King of France doesn't reflect on the morality of monarchy

I get the impulse to furiously denounce the hypothetical egg monopoly gouging the peasantry but I can assure you, it didn't exist, which is the unspoken underlying fact that is why the anger just bounces off the OP without effect

(*Nothing* about the story makes historical sense, not the family still having their great wealth in the 60s -- over ten years after the Revolution -- only to have it taken away by the Cultural Revolution Not the traveling on foot all the way from Shanghai to Hong Kong either)

Yelling at the OP for the failure to understand that other people might take the story seriously along with its political implications But you gotta understand immigrant kids often have parents just make shit up (or say things that get badly misunderstood)

And OP clearly doesn't really have any context for the story other than as this childhood "This is why you stay in school and get a real job rather than coasting on Daddy's money" didactic moral She even says that she agrees revolution is the inevitable result of accumulation

(Indeed she keeps saying the "Cultural Revolution" was an understandable result of rising wealth inequality, which means she's confusing it for the original Revolution and is just using "Cultural Revolution" as a catchall, which increases my suspicion the whole story is fake)

Collectivization of agriculture and the famine that ensued afterwards is the Great Leap Forward, from 1958 to 1962 The Cultural Revolution, from 1966 to 1976, was NOT that - in fact it happened largely because they'd stopped doing that

The whiplash I got when I heard I was related to "g*psy horse thieves" could have been heard from space, but it's nice knowing that one day I can learn a bit about my Romani heritage.
