Hey so a female horse is only a "mare" after it's given birth for the first time, before then it's a "filly" Same with a female pig (which goes from a "gilt" to a "sow"), or a "heifer" becoming a "cow" Do you make this distinction with humans? Why or why not https://twitter.com/BelleSanders_/status/1223043368986431488 …

I hate when they use this talking point They argue that it's cruel and dehumanizing to call humans a "third sex" simply based on whether they're infertile But we *absolutely do do that* for animals - a steer vs a bull, a gelding vs a stallion, a capon vs a rooster

Hang on, you've gone full circle. You started by criticising women who say that labelling infertile people as a third sex, is dehumanising. But that's exactly what you're now arguing.

I'm saying that it's dehumanizing to use animals as a reference at all

Yes, and the way we specifically treated *livestock* animals, including coming up with names for the male and female ones, was entirely based on the utilitarian value of those animals as economic assets for a farm

An "ox" is one of the things a bovine can be along with a steer, a bull, a cow, a heifer, etc and that's not even a reproductive organ thing, it's about whether the castrated male has been trained to pull a plow from calfhood

It's not a good argument for how we should name or treat people The people bringing up old-timey words for humans that did work this way as part of an obviously oppressive social system ("maiden" as a term prizing virginity etc) are just proving the point
