(Good Place series finale spoilers) The way the show treats Jason has kind of rubbed me the wrong way a bit, but his ending was perfect For some reason the fact that he ends by actually becoming what he was pretending to be is really powerful

People reacted to the second to last episode and the introduction of the oblivion door like an unfortunate message of encouraging suicidality But we learn it isn't like that at all Jason doesn't *have* to leave, he's not desperately trying to escape something unbearable

Quite the opposite When you're done, and there's really nothing left to hold you... Staying or going is the same He's ready to leave, because he's done everything for himself he needs to do But there's nothing wrong with staying

He can just sit there, for centuries, in silence and solitude, watching as the world goes by Happy for the other pilgrims who come by, but not needing to intrude on their journey and step on their moment

Idk The Jianyu thing originally came off as kind of mean and dismissive about actual Buddhist monks, in a show that really centered Western analytic philosophy to the detriment of other traditions But I think this payoff made up for it
