They could make up OTHER prophecies.

I do think it's broadly entertaining to mock Christianity, as is our prerogative as a minority community discussing a much larger, more powerful and often-oppressive majority. But at the risk of being a killjoy—I do get concerned when it all starts to be taken seriously.

In this particular instance I'm not mocking Christianity, it's an honest question. Really, I think Jessica's point is better - why do they need prophecies *at all*? But if they DO need prophecies, there's no need to force them onto Jewish texts.

I'm not totally sure I'm in a position to question what I think that Christians should care about, and I'm definitely not in a position to determine whether or not various prophetic interpretations are valid or not.

And I think it's different for appropriation in a modern context, when we're talking specifically about the interactions between Christians and Jewish communities long after the paths separated. But it's a lot to talk about how an entire 2,000-year tradition is illegitimate.

Eventually, we're just doing the Richard Dawkins thing, but making an exception for ourselves.

There wouldn't be the same direct textual issue, but arguably, the Quran's claims that the Torah (along with the Gospels) have been corrupted by their keepers would probably pose the same problem, but more so.

In any event, I don't think it's up to us to decide what other people read and believe, any more than I welcome such input into my own communities.

And while within that, I think that discussions are extremely valuable between different groups, including comparisons of various approaches to traditions, flat denial doesn't seem like a great idea.

This all feels like it's squarely in modern liberal atheist territory to begin with, like just taking it as understood that prophecies aren't real, they're just made up, and expecting people to therefore accept a request to discard the ones they have and make up new ones

Right, yeah - and while people do that from time to time for various reasons of their own, *requesting* it seems to be a significant deviation from what religion ever meant to anyone.

It's also clearly a problem because I have no compunctions about criticizing any newly-created religious movement or even new trends within existing ones regarding things like appropriation, but I think at some point, 'appropriation' isn't really the right framework.

Like, it makes sense to look at the function of prophecies you don't believe in a religion you aren't part of as serving some sort of practical purpose... but people just don't frame beliefs they actually hold that way.
