It's the twee stuff from HHGG that people tend to remember and it's because of that that Adams was at odds with his own fanbase Like the thing where he really wanted the film version of Marvin to be this badass science fiction android and NOT a "cute little robot"https://twitter.com/EepJeep/status/1222966442867462144 …

Like he didn't want it just to be this cutesy joke "Oh it's an appliance that hates itself" He wanted it to be this bigger darker thing, Marvin is the culmination of all the work of the greatest AI researchers in the world, and he has clinical depression

Which doesn't really fit with the Heart of Gold as originally written, but H2G2 adaptations are all about constant reinvention.

Well, Marvin was originally just a random robot who wasn't that special, true But the original idea of the Heart of Gold is everything on it is brand new and really shiny and state of the art, including Marvin

I was thinking more of how everything on it is made to be cloyingly friendly and suitable for galactic mass audiences, plus the whole "your plastic pal who's fun to be with" thing. Although on reflection that could just create further irony if the plastic pal has rocket launchers

I think what he was getting at still works here, like Marvin should look really *cool* even if he's not necessarily scary
