Thomas Wayne would've had to be a teen dad

I think the movie actually says Arthur Fleck is supposed to be in his 20s but just looks old because of his hard life, which, well

Yeah Jokers Mom tells him Thomas Wayne knocked her up, except the movie never confirms if this is true or if she made it up.

Moreover, her belief that her son is Thomas' bastard leads to her stalking him and harassing him and ends with her being institutionalized Which is the beginning of her downward spiral from having been a white collar Wayne Industries employee to life on the skids

If she's telling the truth then Thomas is a truly evil person who went to horrific lengths to protect his reputation If she's just crazy then she's really, really crazy Either way Joker never had a chance and his life is all the fault of one of his parents

yeah trying to pass off Joker as a "cautionary tale" is patently ridiculous, like it's very much "we learned not to do it again...wish I knew what the hell it was we did"

It's a cautionary tale about generally living in a society

I said the other day it has the same broad strokes as Homer's Enemy and I stand by that

I mean I will say again that the idea that the Joker could be any downtrodden poor person who just snaps is false The movie makes it very clear that a big part of what's fucked him in the head is his deluded belief he was robbed of a life as Thomas Wayne's son and heir

It tries to have it both ways, he snaps both because of his intolerable life that would make anyone snap AND because of his deluded entitlement toward a better life that couldn't ever be true (OR COULD IT)

Replying to @arthur_affect @saintwalker98 and
Arthur's downfall is overdetermined The movie is salivating so hard at watching him become the Joker that it arranges absolutely everything in his life to make becoming the Joker inevitable It totally fails to make the point "Anyone could snap if they had one bad day"
