The funny thing I haven't seen people really talk about is that Rick and Morty is, for better or for worse, 100% a modernization of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Everything people don't like about it is what they wouldn't like about Douglas Adams if he were new

I get where you’re coming from but Adams cynicism was MUCH less nihilistic and a lot more absurdist & whimsical. Rick & Morty is more nasty & a lot less clever than most of Adams work. It also seem to take itself way more seriously than HHG

My whole thing here is if you reread Adams, as I recently did, the HHGG series is a LOT darker than a lot of the fans remember it as, there's a lot of shit all the way through it that's just brutal

He's the one who started the whole "Invent a whole civilization and then kill them all off just for the sake of making a point" thing

Sure, but it was pretty much always presented in a way that wasn’t then framed with “lol”. It may have been incidentally funny, but his darkness felt tragic, not just a punchline (even if it *was* a punchline). Like I said: not mean.

I'm going to respectfully suggest that Arthur has a point when he says that we've rounded up a lot of the humour to "not mean" in memory. Like, this is a *throwaway gag* from Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I'd call it mean and it's definitely framed as a "LOL".pic.twitter.com/UrmbHciEkc

The whole thing with the sperm whale is absolutely R&M-style sadistic humor

I remember DA saying the inspiration for that was seeing innocent bystanders in shows like Cannon killed off randomly without a 2nd thought. So he decided to invent and kill off a random character as a plot point and make it sympathetic enough so people cared.

Yeah, which is a familiar joke now - suddenly having the dying guard gurgle "Tell my wife--" - but is extra fucked up because of the sheer absurdity of the situation
