I haven't really watched R&M since season 2. Has there been a parallel to the weirdly sentimental moment where Marvin died?

I would nominate a couple of moments as such The moment when Summer is having an existential crisis so Morty reveals he and Rick came from another world and show her her real brother and grandpa's graves (the source of the quote "Nobody exists on purpose")

The speech Rick gives Beth at the end of her special episode with her imaginary friends, offering to give her a life of adventure by creating a clone to be the dutiful wife and mother she can't be

The corresponding speech Beth gives to Jerry in a later episode where she reveals her tearful fear that she's the impostor because she doesn't want to leave

I'm honestly really impressed by how this show took off and really happy for it as someone who got a lot of value from the sensitive episodes of Community. I'll have to watch more when I am less annoyingly reactive to the pickle rick/mulan sauce/OBJECTIVE SCIENCE stuff

I hate that I have this kneejerk reaction when it's also a show that is directly challenging even the most insensitive to consider their feelings and sympathies.

Having cooled on my kneejerk dislike of the fanbase due to the stupid Szechuan sauce thing I feel like R&M is cursed by wanting to be about something serious but the grossout humor and memes that got it popular attract all the wrong people

Which is extra ironic because it's all always been meta, the "WUBBA-LUB-LUB!" thing was specifically a joke about Rick giving himself a meaningless catchphrase, the Szechuan sauce thing was Rick making up a fake motivation for himself to avoid confronting his real past, etc

For the record, Adams is clearly on record as being annoyed by the memes in his fanbase too, all the "hoopy frood" and "Don't forget your towel!" and "42!" stuff that stopped being funny a while ago

In So Long and Thanks for All the Fish he gets mean about it, like right before the Arthur/Fenchurch sex scene he says if you don't want to see this crap you can just skip ahead to the page number where Marvin comes back

Upon which he proceeds to finally kill Marvin (because he was sick of the character, who is a very Rick-like avatar of humorous nihilistic depression manifesting as interpersonal passive aggression and abuse)
