The funny thing I haven't seen people really talk about is that Rick and Morty is, for better or for worse, 100% a modernization of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Everything people don't like about it is what they wouldn't like about Douglas Adams if he were new

I haven’t watched it, but honestly, the fandom has turned me off. But I am a HUGE Douglas Adams fan.

The petty nihilism was all there in HHGG back in the day too, it's just that Adams' fanbase got old I mean one of the running gags from the franchise is the Guide having a whole entry for the ultimate alcoholic beverage

It didn’t seem dark then, in contrast to what we were expecting. And then the world didn’t end in inevitable nuclear fire, to our surprise.

Maybe it should be viewed through the lens of gallows humor.

I don't think gallows humor has ever gone out of style, I mean the nukes are still there, plus a million other problems

The nukes aren’t there like when I was a kid in the 80’s. We had Chernobyl, 3 Mile Island and Reagan. Being nuked seemed like a real possibility.

Nuclear power plant malfunctions aren't the same issue as nuclear weapons and I honestly think anti-nuclear fear has really screwed us over when it comes to climate change

And I mean Rick and Morty along with other modern examples of "nihilistic humor" is absolutely a reaction to current events The Tales from the Citadel episode was made just before the 2016 US election and the whole thing is a big mood about the country irrevocably falling apart

Like I said, I haven’t seen it, so I can’t comment on specifics. But the Guide characters were laid back and none of them had really bad motives. It was all froody.
