Honestly I'm now thinking it would have been really cool if the film had left open the possibility that Rey was just being gaslit just like Anakin had been (canonically, Plegeius did NOT conceive him) and maybe she really was nobody, but it doesn't matter

I guess what I'm saying is just that everyone had three theories after TFA, Rey Palpatine was the second most common (after Rey Kenobi) with Rey Nobody being third. So it was all pretty foreshadowed

I personally think Rey-the-Chosen-One-but-Genetically-Nobody would actually have tied things much better to the previous trilogy, and continued the established tradition since RotJ of the story actually being about Anakin, but no one was expecting that.

Rey Palpatine was the worst of the three foreshadowed options, but I think all three were foreshadowed on purpose.

If she had to be someone’s (grand)child then Palpatine was probably one of the better choices. If only so that none of the protagonists ended up abandoning a child alone one on desert planet.

i can't really imagine obi-juan our only ho abandoning a child instead he'd be like "i'll train that baby to be the jedi who'll surpass the skywalkers" or some equally shonen cliche lol

Or, y'know, he could have had sex and then left on some important jedi errand and not known about the kid.

Yeah, I think most instances were trying to fit a way into the timeline that Satine could have given birth before Maul killed her, but like... If that were the case they'd have linked Rey to Mandalorian stuff, like, at all

Also that would have made Rey like 40 so she'd have had to be a grandkid too

Frankly, I'd kind of like a surprise reveal that Rey has been wandering the desert for 40 years and is secretly just much younger looking than she really is. If Yoda can live to 900, it stands to reason that strong force users may be remarkably well-preserved.
