The funny thing I haven't seen people really talk about is that Rick and Morty is, for better or for worse, 100% a modernization of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Everything people don't like about it is what they wouldn't like about Douglas Adams if he were new

The show very much problematizes Beth and Jerry - they keep coming back together no matter what happens but it's just as toxic as it is touching, they each feed each other's worst habits

They sort of have to so the show keeps getting made, don’t they? It’s not the type of thing you can have any character development along the lines of Ventura Bros. Also why HHGTTG wouldn’t work as an ongoing tv show & barely worked as a “trilogy”.

You can read it as "they're miserable without the family to fulfill them, which shows how great family life is" or "they're such terrible, dysfunctional people that they break down without the shitty dynamics of the family to keep them in check"

Much like internet jokes, R&M thrives on the audience's ability to take it at face value or interpret in as much irony as they like The advantage it has over internet jokes is that the fake irony is pasted over a traditional family sitcom instead of racism
