I think people may overstate the degree to which Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland actually identify with Rick (or disidentify with Morty and Jerry)

Yes and no I think Harmon is well aware he's not the smartest man in the universe and honestly from knowing way too much about the man via Harmontown etc Rick's rant about how Jerry uses pity as a weapon sounds a lot like Harmon's self loathing

How much do you want to bet the Rick and Morty inevitably ends the way Breaking Bad or Fight Club did?

Storytelling, I kind of think the show needs to dispense with subtlety and show people turning against Rick.

They've been hinting for a while at a really dark backstory for the show that will force some kind of reckoning with Rick's culpability when it comes out Like I consider it really likely that "Evil Morty" is Rick's original Morty that he abandoned

At this point I'd wonder if that's almost too obvious - or something that was the plan at one point but might not still be. Leaving themselves with the open question of what Beth is a whole other angle on where "evil anyone" might've come from...

Yeah at this point I'd consider it a twist if that weren't the explanation The opening titles straight up showing Rick abandoning Morty would be a perfect "hidden in plain sight" foreshadowing if they'd pulled the trigger on it earlier
