I'd even argue that Arthur Dent is a clear precursor to both Morty and Jerry, like Adams was being subversive and having the ordinary Earth everyman companion character not be all that appealing or great of a person

There’s a line in the radio dramas that’s not in the books where Ford tells Arthur even if their companions needed their help, there was nothing they could do one way or another. You just moved on with your life & got extremely drunk about it afterwards. That explains that.
