The funny thing I haven't seen people really talk about is that Rick and Morty is, for better or for worse, 100% a modernization of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Everything people don't like about it is what they wouldn't like about Douglas Adams if he were new

Once something's happened to you like watching your home planet be destroyed due to a bureaucratic error you can't ever be normal or convince yourself the world makes sense again You might as well become a universal hitchhiker like Ford (Who is a constantly drunk asshole)

I'd even argue that Arthur Dent is a clear precursor to both Morty and Jerry, like Adams was being subversive and having the ordinary Earth everyman companion character not be all that appealing or great of a person

That comes from the original ORIGINAL Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy pitch, where every episode would be a parallel timeline where the Earth gets destroyed for a new dumb reason. (An idea also attempted in the rare Douglas Adams/ Graham Chapman pilot Out of the Trees.)
-
Which he eventually came full circle on with Mostly Harmless, the reveal that the Vogons have created the InfiniDim Corporation and the Guide Mk II to doom every parallel Earth in the multiverse to be destroyed one way or another

I hope Authur doesn't come here. He'd keel over. Or go full final scene of Planet of the Apes
