Like the pitch for HHGG is "Doctor Who if the Doctor were a completely irresponsible dipshit" (Ford in the original BBC series is deliberately Doctor-esque) and that's exactly what Rick and Morty is

The original draft of HHGG as a radio play even has that grimdark idea of multiple timelines built into it It has Ford give Arthur a speech that he could easily take him to a parallel universe where the Earth wasn't destroyed but he'd just go insane from knowing the truth

Once something's happened to you like watching your home planet be destroyed due to a bureaucratic error you can't ever be normal or convince yourself the world makes sense again You might as well become a universal hitchhiker like Ford (Who is a constantly drunk asshole)

I'd even argue that Arthur Dent is a clear precursor to both Morty and Jerry, like Adams was being subversive and having the ordinary Earth everyman companion character not be all that appealing or great of a person

I haven’t watched it, but honestly, the fandom has turned me off. But I am a HUGE Douglas Adams fan.

The petty nihilism was all there in HHGG back in the day too, it's just that Adams' fanbase got old I mean one of the running gags from the franchise is the Guide having a whole entry for the ultimate alcoholic beverage

That is why I've never gotten into R&M. I was tired of HHGTG before I was 25

I do think the premise is very similar, but I think HHGTTG has a different writing style. It's much more surreal. The humour isn't very... typical. Rick and Morty seems a bit more dry-witted...? I'm a huge HHGTTG fan though, so maybe I'm just fangirling over here.

Less mean for meanness sake, more tolerant of the characters' flaws while still existing them, more witty and generally British. I don't think you can discuss Adams without acknowledging his voice is what people like, as much or more than the stories.

You're kind of in denial if you don't see that stuff in Adams I mean you know he was BFFs with Dawkins
