My favorite part is, technically, one could make the claim it is a tradition going back to Othello, which given its racial nature, means it's several centuries overdue for a rethinking. Mind, at the time it would have been quite progressive, but, not because of racism, but poliks

Othello is textually Moorish, which is a rather... storied people, so it'd be progressive due to that, rather then black because it was prior to the white/black dichotomy that came later, with the advent of slavery, as best as I can explain in 240 at least lol

Yeah I’m not sure if Othello as the main character and (tragic) hero of his story is an example of this tripe exactly. Part of the reason these others are funny is bc they’re all minor/supporting cast.

Yep, it's why I am uncertain of it, because he is so central and so heroic in his tale, but, the ways racism has changed in the years since is a possible explanation, still not personally convinced it's the root, just thought it interesting to note.

He’s also not in a fantasy kingdom but he *does* fit the noble Black military figure in an all white pseudo feudal context aspect of the trope lol

Yeah but he was an actual general out fighting wars, I think part of OP's joke is the Captain of the Guard seems like an important title but doesn't actually do anything in the story

I see this trope as a kind of watering down the "amanda waller / Nick Fury" trope, were you had a militarysh black person in a position of power... but insted of being an ACTIVE FORCE, they are just, there, being a glorified bodygard (LOL arthemis fowl will have literaly this)
