You're missing the point, this is where the freshman philosophy class predictably brings up virtue ethics as a third option between deontology and consequentialism It's not that hanging out with transphobes is Wrong Just Wrong, it's that it signals what kind of person you are https://twitter.com/dylanmatt/status/1221826247757570048 …

It's the fact that, as @transscribe brings up in your article, deciding that someone saying transphobic shit is no big deal is a very clear signal that someday you'll think compromising on trans rights is no big deal Regardless of what your website says right now

This is what I hate about conservatives making "virtue signaling" into a slur Virtue signaling is VERY IMPORTANT Imperfect as it is, it matters a lot more than just asking you what your values are and expecting you to be honest

You have to have skin in the fucking game Anyone can say they're an ally to trans people when talking directly to trans people and everyone does No one knows where you stand until they see you talking to transphobes Deciding whose friend you are because you can't be everyone's

"What value would there be in Bernie telling off Joe Rogan and throwing away his votes" It would be proof that when he says he cares about trans people he MEANS IT It's a "costly signal", it's him personally giving up something as a sign of loyalty

Talk is cheap If all you have to do is tell people what you support in theory then it's easy for everyone in the world to be an ally to everybody If you want to convince me you'll have my back when things are hard, you gotta give up something now when things are easy

This is the whole thing about activists being "obnoxious" and "trying to drive people away" This is sociology 101 Being obnoxious is a loyalty test The people who won't have your back because they're afraid of losing friends now won't have it when it's a real fight later

Cheap Talk and vs costly signals are a very important concept in game theory. For those who may think this is all "touchy-feely nonsense", I want them to know that there is some very rigorous game theory behind these ideas.
