You're missing the point, this is where the freshman philosophy class predictably brings up virtue ethics as a third option between deontology and consequentialism It's not that hanging out with transphobes is Wrong Just Wrong, it's that it signals what kind of person you are https://twitter.com/dylanmatt/status/1221826247757570048 …

Talk is cheap If all you have to do is tell people what you support in theory then it's easy for everyone in the world to be an ally to everybody If you want to convince me you'll have my back when things are hard, you gotta give up something now when things are easy

This is the whole thing about activists being "obnoxious" and "trying to drive people away" This is sociology 101 Being obnoxious is a loyalty test The people who won't have your back because they're afraid of losing friends now won't have it when it's a real fight later

I like to think that, if put in the same position, where the right thing to do is also politically inconvenient, I would still do the right thing. Maybe I wouldn't. Lucky for me, though, I'm not being tested right now.

Sounds good. Except, its a sad truth that most people in US don't care about trans rights. Those that DO care very much are in a minority. And the choice at this point is between a candidate who would shoot transpeople in the streets if he could and a guy who is for their rights.

And I am really, really sick of equating talking with liberal guy who supports 95% leftist policies with "the worst thing ever!" because you disagree with that 5%. And equaling talking with that guy and accepting promotion with allying with his base while excluding everybody els.

I saw an interesting case of this with
@PeteButtigieg on the Fox forum where he refused to compromise on his pro-choice stance to a pro-life voter. He didn't get defensive, he didn't beg for her vote. He articulated his position and told her he wouldn't lie to get her vote.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

It really is sad to see the same people who reacted with outrage to any compromise to neoliberal policies saying it's okay to accept bigotry as long as it gives us votes.

From a consequentialist point of view, promoting the JR endorsement is the action that has the BEST chance of actually improving trans people's lives in the long run.

I don't want Bernie to disavow Joe Rogan because of transphobic views, I want Bernie to reaffirm his support for trans rights and disavow transphobia. He doesn't have to go on the attack to make the point, and its far more important to me that Bernie wins the primaries
