I always viewed 'the thing' as a symptom of the way society tends to push cis men into a box where they end up struggling to express their emotions in a healthy way. As such they ended up attaching too much investment into something so criticism on it was perceived as attacks.

I did buy games when I had trouble buying food for myself. It was either years old games, used games on old console or old PC at minimum graphic with a framerate in the single digit.
