It's all part of the job. If we're going to be farming without the use of irrigation hoses or wheels on flatland spray equipment I need to get started. (And why? How much energy is used to levitate a 500 gallon sprayer when wheels use no energy?)

This is Star Trek, they waste energy like nobody's business Everyone's room has an automatic door, regular meals are constructed by matter replicators, even a simple tool like a bucket to hold water has blinking lights all over it

I mean whatever, it's just a matter of what your society considers cheap I'm sure someone frugal-minded from the 18th century would be horrified at the idea of getting in a petroleum-burning horseless carriage and "driving around for a while just to clear my head"

They have nearly 100% efficient recycling as well, by breaking matter down to an energy stream. So basically this farm is like a medieval reenactment.

To be fair as far as I can tell to enter officer training in Starfleet you have to be a member in good standing of their version of the SCA

It is my personal headcanon that STNG makes a lot more sense if you think of it as highly dedicated hobbiests with access to nukes.

A friend of mine always portrays them as one of the special interest groups in The Culture.

They are basically Contact.

Or maybe one of the special interest groups that is LARPing space exploration. That would explain why anything they ever do works even though it's always ridiculous

I love this idea. The GCU (eccentric) Starship Enterprise is just constantly cleaning up after them/preventing them from blowing themselves and/or spacetime up with its effectors and various fields while they address it as 'Computer', but it enjoys this for some reason.

I've seen a fanfic about the idea that Q is one of the Minds

Also a cool idea! I was actually thinking maybe Q is the GM, but he would also probably be a Mind in that scenario

A GM who gets really sick of space exploration historical fiction every now and then and badgers them into playing a Robin Hood rpg with the concession that fine they can keep playing the same characters if they insist??
