This is a really good post. I find it really tiring when Trek fans act as if its weird that people today wouldn't relate to a utopian future where the government and military are objectively benevolent https://abigailnussbaum.tumblr.com/post/190456082585/opinions-about-tiaras-ncfan-1-welp-the-rise/amp#click=https://t.co/Gnopscx4TX …

The idea that the themes of STP aren't there in TNG is just false anyway The whole thing is very clearly an extension of what everyone says is one of the best ever TNG eps, The Measure of a Man, right down to the backstory revolving around Dr Maddox

The Federation has ALWAYS made an "exception" for artificial life forms in their charter The trial in The Measure of a Man was because it was the legal status quo that Maddox could kidnap and vivisect Data without his consent because he's not a person but a piece of equipment

And the outcome of the trial did NOT establish Data's legal personhood, it just said they couldn't do specifically that It didn't settle anything, it just deferred the question

Remember how Moriarty became sapient and Picard couldn't think of any way to deal with his situation but locking him in a box And then he called him out on his horrifying this was so then they locked him in a different kind of box

Remember the Doctor's arc on Voyager and how they repeatedly punt on the question of whether holographic sims have rights The thing where all the other EMH Mk Is are used as slaves for manual labor and his book becomes a revolutionary text

This conflict has been a long, long time coming And it was extremely naive to think that the Federation would just automatically become liberal and tolerant on the topic of "synths", *especially* as they become more advanced and more genuinely capable of replacing humans

The real lie that I think the OP is clinging to is the idea of *stable* utopia, of stasis The Federation may have found that economic and social conflict among "normal" humans and species close enough to humans is a solved problem But new problems keep on coming
