The thing that's always struck me as weird is that, from the beginning, Chidi hardly ever bothered to critique the system he'd been dropped into--only Eleanor did that. Chidi just assumed it was just and that this was a game he could win by understanding Good.

I suppose this allowed them to give the characters different functions, but how likely is it that someone with Chidi's life history and training would take that attitude, rather than immediately deciding this was all fucked up?

Given how much they were drawing on the afterlife as being like a big sitcom in the first two seasons, it’s not surprising to have them arrive at the idea of leaving aside one life and taking up another, like an actor with roles.
