Ironically people's resistance reminds me a lot of how people react to the news that most unpaid internships are illegal and always have been "Well that makes sense for Google or Microsoft, but I'm a tiny startup, how am I supposed to pay my interns" I dunno but it's the law

The legislation is perfectly just and probably doesn't go far enough

Drivers don't get paid nearly enough in general sure Saying they don't get paid enough to let a disabled person sit in their car is total bullshit and makes you a shit person though

The people giving well meaning suggestions like "Maybe Uber should have a special list of drivers who agree to get paid a big bonus to carry the burden of serving disabled passengers" are not helping, in fact they suck donkey dick

What, specifically, about picking up disabled passengers increases the burden of maintenance and fueling such that it's a reason not to do it

The "accommodation" is letting someone sit in your fucking car while you drive them someplace like every other customer

You all act like this is about people demanding drivers have specialized equipment like wheelchair lifts when nobody anywhere has made that demand Everyone knows if you actually need a special vehicle you need to request one People aren't stupid

This particular case blew up because the customer specifically made arrangements so the driver wouldn't have to do ANYTHING AT ALL - not even just put a folded wheelchair in the trunk, which everyone does for passengers with luggage - and he still wouldn't let her in the car

(Actually, not everyone does for passengers with luggage. There are many of us who drive that don’t either because we physically can’t or because the money’s not worth the risk to our backs. Wheelchairs are generally a lot lighter than luggage these days, though.)
