Death Note really could be read as a very hard deconstruction of Batman, in both the sense of the vigilantism escalating but also the relationship with police, where they don't welcome the help and the attempt to essentially usurp them makes them targets rather than "criminals"

I guess my point is that Kira seems to take a superhero's challenge to the state"s "monopoly on force" to an extreme. I'd imagine it could be done if he inflicted non-lethal harm on people too in the same omniscient way, it'd just be less dramatic

But the point is, as long as there's a Kira, society's institutions related to crime just can't function
